Do you own firearms as part of your preps and if so what is your firearm of choice, and why?

Oh.. yes and all the things. It's good to have bases covered: pistol, shotgun and a rifle. What you choose for each of those depends on budget. I urge also a good .22 and/or .22lr as well.

Great points, and basing things on your budget is a factor i don't always take into account being that shooting is one of my hobbies and something I have been at for a long time. When im asked i usually recommend a 12 or 20 gauge pump action shotgun (Remington 870 or Mossberg 500/590) to start. Being it has bulletproof reliability, ammo can be found everywhere, its a show stopper for close range self defense and can be used for hunting both large and small game depending on the load. Also pretty affordable for $250-$400. After that I usually recommend a Glock 19, (9mm) I know, I know, people hate glocks and 9mm but name me one gun and caliber that has sold more in the U.S. in the past 20 years than the glock 19? The reliability is second to none, the magazines are abundant along with parts if you need them, they are easy to shoot. Also 9mm is an effective, cheap, and abundant cartridge. You dont have to like them, just know how to use them. They are also affordable to most being $400ish used and $500-550 new. As for hunting rifles any common caliber .308win, 30-06, 30-30 is great. As you said above a good .22lr bolt gun or ruger 10/22 for smaller game and or training kids & new shooters. Also .22 ammo is dirt cheap and easy to store, so stock up while you can. What i usually don't recommend to new shooters or people on a tight budget is the AR15, while its popular, easy to shoot for most, it does come in a little father down the list of "must haves". Don't get me wrong, i shoot them weekly, build & maintain them, but they are actually to me more of a nice to have than a need for prepping.

.22LR is a must. I like the new Ruger 10/22 take downs. A Shotgun like a Mossberg 500 or Rem 870 is good to have in the toolbox. I also am a firm believe that you have a good bolt gun. My personal favorite cartridge is the 30-06. Its large enough to take down all Big Game in the PNW and doesn't cost that much to shoot.
For Handgun I like a .357 mag revolver because you can also fire .38special out of it. I'm currently a 45 semi auto guy but have turned the corner to wanting a 9mm.

In my opinion all excellent choices. Being older both the 30-06 and .357 have been pretty prolific in my life. Grew up shooting my dads S&W Model 19 and till this day am still 100% confident rolling that D/A trigger😂. As for .45acp it’s my favorite round to shoot and reload but with modern 9mm cartridge improvements, the performance, higher capacity, weight savings, lower training cost, and reliability in today’s striker fired guns, it’s my go to for self defense. While I’ll never ditch the 1911 all together, the Glock 19 is the tool I choose for EDC or a SHTF scenario.
