So as a teen I was an athlete, team sports as a kid, primarily baseball, boxing, and Karate through high school. After high school worked fishing boats in Alaska, did line construction (climbed power poles everyday) was a resident firefighter/EMT, and was into mountaineering, rock climbing, Mt. Biking, and snowboarding. Needless to say I was a fit muscular 160 pounds into my 30’s.
Fast forward to my mid 40’s with 2 kids, a less physical job, a wife that is an incredible cook & master baker, and at 5’ 8” I had ballooned to 306 pounds 😮.
Then one day after seeing a picture of a guy (me) I didn’t even know and thinking “man he let himself go”. I decided it was time to get back in shape. Being an athlete early in life I knew what i had to do. Eat smart and workout. It’s that simple. No magic pill or silver bullets solution. Dedication and sweat. I joined the local gym, got on my Mt. Bike, did P90X, Insanty, and ran. I even competed and won our local “biggest loser” chalange by dropping 54# in 8 weeks. In just under a year I had dropped 90# in all and was feeling the best I had in 20 years.
Then it happened. Started losing strength in my right arm and experienced shoulder pain. A MRI reviled I needed to have my rotator cuff repaired and a possible tare in my bicep. During surgery it was discovered that my bicep was actually less than 50% attached so it had to be cut and reattach with a screw. That was in October of last year. Over the time leading up to the surgery I slacked off on workouts, started eating garbage, an after months of rehab have gained back more than half the weight I’d lost in the past 2 years.
So at the ripe old age of 50😂 I'll be starting the whole process again. An as before there is no secret diet, magic pill, or infomercial gimmick to get the job done. It just boils down to getting out of bed with the determination and willingness to to do the work.
As for how any of this pertains to prepping and survival? Well I’m guessing It’s not called “survival of the fattest” for a reason? 😆
