I am thinking about trying to buy things like cherries, citus and other foods that have a relatively short-ish market life directly from the growers or middlemen type suppliers but I have not really found any good options. Does anyone else buy fruits and vegetables like this to put up or is it best to stick to prepackaged frozen/canned in the store? When we get cherries here they are around $7 a pound and I buy as many as I can to can for my husband but I am trying to see if I can get a better price and maybe value too. Most of what I am finding is gift basket type shops, which isn't close to what I want. Our coops leave a whole lot to be desired and the farmers markets we can get to are a joke.

I was going to recommend a local co-op but it sounds like you’ve already checked into that. We are fortunate in that we have tons of Orchards within 30 minutes of us so we buy Cases of Apples, Pears, and many of the vegetable we don’t grow ourselves. It makes for some long weekends of canning but we do a years worth in a couple days.

That is what I would like to do but the one year I was in a local coop was less than impressive and now they want triple the $$$ for the same amount of food that wasn't all that impressive to begin with. I am not looking for showroom produce but it would be nice to have it last long enough to get to the pickup location. Further upstate has better food but our car barely makes it to work and back and we have never driven it more than 25 miles away from our house.

When I was a kid we used to make a yearly run to the Yakima valley in Washington State. We would load down our pickup with fruits and veggies then can most of it. These days its more of buying meat in bulk and packaging it for our freezers. I buy my meat from Zayconfresh.com. We get our fruit from the farm stands in the Hood River Valley and Costco when the price is right. We don't can anymore except for the occasional spicy dill pickles. I'm kinda interested and hearing about peoples experience in canning meats such as chicken breast and beef.

Zaycon isn't much of an option for us right now but I want to try canning my meat eventually, at least some of it, just to see how it turns out. I haven't done it so far because I am scared it will come out like the stuff from the store which is way less than appealing. If our car was better we would be buying from the upick farms on the islands but as it is we don't trust it to get there and back. I have contacted several local farm food distributes that say they deliver to individual buyers but nobody has replied yet.
