Have you done an inventory lately? What are you missing? I need to go through and rebuild my canned food this summer.

We are short on several things. One being securing the canned items in case of Earthquake (which mainly becomes a in home political discussion on the best way and ascetics). We have a good freeze dried supply and some 4 gallon food buckets of various base ingredients (flours, salt, sugar, beans...). When I get a chance I plan to post some of the information I found listing how much to plant to feed X people per year under Gardening)...which goes to the same line of thinking (what is missing).

My biggest issue is space, as in, I have none! We are jammed packed, with next to no room to spare. I keep buying things, and somehow manage to find spots to put them. Well, my kids find space, and probably occasionally want to whack me upside the head LOL.

I'm shifting to different food items to store. Since I went Keto I'm eating less canned foods and more fresh stuff. That said I still have a lot of canned food, rice, beans, oatmeal and the like stored. I've been donating the canned stuff (with the exception of my beloved Spam) and replacing them with freeze dried meats and vegetables. Rice, beans, and oatmeal I'm holding on to for bartering if nothing else. If worse comes to worse I'll gladly eat them. The other upside to freeze dried is the weight is so much less than canned. I can easily carry weeks worth of food as opposed to a few days. Currently I'm not short on anything and have stores to last 4 people a little over a year.

I have 5 - 55 gallon metal drums up against an exterior wall for easy extraction should it become necessary. 55's are your friend. They hold a crap ton of stuff, are crush resistant, and keep stuff organized. Aside from food, I have barrels dedicated for living quarters / medical and clothes / games. I need three more barrels and I should be good. Also, if you put plywood on top of them they make a great work space for prep work to do vacuum sealing and dehydrating.

We really don't as a society think vertical enough. Under bed...mainly collects dust for most. You can grow a lot of vertical food, store outside in the right containers...now if in an apartment you have to get very creative.

We are a family of 5 living in just under 1000 sq ft. Every room is jammed packed but we somehow find ways to stick more stuff in. My husband brought some wooded crates home that we stacked and use for cans, that helps a lot and I'm always resorting and stacking.
